10.3. Typical application for solenoid drive current-sensing

Similarly, solenoid drive current sensing also faces the challenges. In certain topologies, the
current-sensing amplifier is exposed to the full-scale PWM voltage between ground and supply. For this
type of application, the DIO2240 is well suitable.
For solenoid drive current-sensing application, the DIO2240 measures current with a 24 V, 500 mA water
valve. To demonstrate the device performance, the DIO2240D with a gain of 200 V/V was selected for this
design and powered from a 5 V supply.
As mentioned before, the reference point is set to midscale by splitting the supply with one reference pin
connected to ground and the other one connected to supply. Alternatively, the reference pins can be
connected together and driven with an external precision reference.
To keep the analog input within the device limits, select a value of 10 mΩ.
11.Layout Guidelines
Additional resistance between the input pins of the amplifier will be generated by the poor placement of the
current-sensing resistor. Because of the low current resistor, any additional high-current carrying
impedance can bring significant measurement errors. To ensure that only the current-sensing resistor
impedance is detected between the input pins, use a Kelvin or 4-wire connection to connect to the device
input pins.
