TheHALTinstructionforcesthemicrocontrollerintotheSLEEPorIDLEModewhichpreserves
power,afeaturethatisimportantforbatteryandotherlow-powerapplications.Variousmethods
existtowake-upthemicrocontroller,oneofwhichistochangethelogicconditionononeofthePort
Apinsfromhightolow.Thisfunctionisespeciallysuitableforapplicationsthatcanbewokenup
viaexternalswitches.EachpinonPortAcanbeselectedindividuallytohavethiswake-upfeature
usingthePAWUregister.Notethatthewake-upfunctioncanbecontrolledbythewake-upcontrol
registersonlywhenthepin-sharedfunctionalpinisselectedasgeneralpurposeinput/outputandthe
MCUentersthePowerdownmode.

Withthiscontrolregister,eachCMOSoutputorinputcanbereconfigureddynamicallyunder
softwarecontrol.EachpinoftheI/Oportsisdirectlymappedtoabitinitsassociatedportcontrol
register.FortheI/Opintofunctionasaninput,thecorrespondingbitofthecontrolregistermust
bewrittenasa“1”.Thiswillthenallowthelogicstateoftheinputpintobedirectlyreadby
instructions.Whenthecorrespondingbitofthecontrolregisteriswrittenasa“0”,theI/Opinwill
besetupasaCMOSoutput.Ifthepiniscurrentlysetupasanoutput,instructionscanstillbeused
toreadtheoutputregister.However,itshouldbenotedthattheprogramwillinfactonlyreadthe
statusoftheoutputdatalatchandnottheactuallogicstatusoftheoutputpin.
