Managing Receiver Errors

SeveraltypesofreceptionerrorscanoccurwithintheUARTmodule,thefollowingsectiondescribes

thevarioustypesandhowtheyaremanagedbytheUART.

Overrun Error – OERR

TheTXR_RXRregisteriscomposedofatwobytedeepFIFOdatabuffer,wheretwobytescanbe

heldintheFIFOregister,whileathirdbytecancontinuetobereceived.Beforethisthirdbytehas

beenentirelyshiftedin,thedatashouldbereadfromtheTXR_RXRregister.Ifthisisnotdone,the

overrunerrorflagOERRwillbeconsequentlyindicated.

Intheeventofanoverrunerroroccurring,thefollowingwillhappen:

• TheOERRflagintheUSRregisterwillbeset.

• TheTXR_RXRcontentswillnotbelost.

• Theshiftregisterwillbeoverwritten.

• AninterruptwillbegeneratediftheRIEbitisset.

TheOERRflagcanbeclearedbyanaccesstotheUSRregisterfollowedbyareadtotheTXR_

RXRregister.

Noise Error – NF

Over-samplingisusedfordatarecoverytoidentifyvalidincomingdataandnoise.Ifnoiseis

detectedwithinaframethefollowingwilloccur:

• Thereadonlynoiseflag,NF,intheUSRregisterwillbesetontherisingedgeoftheRXIFbit.

• DatawillbetransferredfromtheShiftregistertotheTXR_RXRregister.

• Nointerruptwillbegenerated.HoweverthisbitrisesatthesametimeastheRXIFbitwhich

itselfgeneratesaninterrupt.

NotethattheNFflagisresetbyaUSRregisterreadoperationfollowedbyaTXR_RXRregister

readoperation.

Framing Error – FERR

Thereadonlyframingerrorflag,FERR,intheUSRregister,issetifazeroisdetectedinsteadof

stopbits.Iftwostopbitsareselected,bothstopbitsmustbehigh;otherwisetheFERRflagwill

beset.TheFERRflagandthereceiveddatawillberecordedintheUSRandTXR_RXRregisters

respectively,andtheflagisclearedinanyreset.

Parity Error – PERR

Thereadonlyparityerrorflag,PERR,intheUSRregister,issetiftheparityofthereceivedwordis

incorrect.Thiserrorflagisonlyapplicableiftheparityisenabled,PREN=1,andiftheparitytype,

oddorevenisselected.ThereadonlyPERRflagandthereceiveddatawillberecordedintheUSR

andTXR_RXRregistersrespectively.Itisclearedonanyreset,itshouldbenotedthattheflags,

FERRandPERR,intheUSRregistershouldfirstbereadbytheapplicationprogrambeforereading

thedataword.
