Counter mode (CTR) uses a running counter to generate a keystream which is exclusive-ored with the input data, as

opposed to Cipher Block Chaining (CBC). CTR is illustrated in Figure 24 on page 26, which is taken from NIST Special

Publication 800-38a [16].

Counter mode is used in a number of protocols, including for wireless security and for streaming media.

Direction:

• 0 = Outbound

• 1 = Inbound

• 00 = NULL

• 01 = HMAC-MD5

• 10 = HMAC-SHA1

• 11 = Reserved

• 00 = CBC

• 01 = CTR

• 10 = Reserved

• 01 = 192 bits

• 10 = 256 bits

The total length of the input for encryption or decryption must be a multiple of the cipher block size

(16 bytes for AES).
